the 2025 Cubbon and Associates Legal Writing Competition IS now OPEN

The Toledo Bar Association is thrilled to announce the 2025 Cubbon and Associates Legal Writing Competition for new lawyers is now accepting submissions! This competition is designed to showcase the exemplary legal writing skills of our newest members in a challenging and rewarding environment.

Competition Tracks and Submissions

Participants may enter either the Criminal or Civil track. We invite you to submit your best motions or briefs that have been filed in any Ohio-based court.

Eligibility and Requirements

This competition is open to attorneys who are, at the time of the 2025 Bench Bar Conference, within five years of their bar admission and licensed to practice in Ohio. TBA membership is encouraged but not required. Entries must be substantially authored by the participant, though they may include minor contributions from others. Each submission must include a certification of authorship by the participant. Register for the 2025 competition here.

Judging and Awards

Entries will be judged by a panel of distinguished legal professionals across each track, focusing on novelty, complexity, persuasiveness, research depth, and writing quality. There are up to five finalists per track, and winners will be announced and celebrated at the 2025 Toledo Bar Association Bench Bar Conference on October 24, 2025, where they will receive a special plaque and have their work featured in the Toledo Bar Association Monthly Newsletter and on our website.
